Only five provinces in Canada regulate the practice of traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture: British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec and Newfoundland and Labrador. Eight of the thirteen provinces and Territories either do not regulate this profession or are working towards regulating this profession.
The regulatory bodies in these five regulated provinces are grouped under the Canadian Alliance of Regulatory Bodies for Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners and Acupuncturists (CARB-TCMPA). Recognizing the need for common standards, shared competencies and assessment vehicles to assess the knowledge, skills and judgment of practitioners in this profession in Canada, CARB-TCMPA members have collaborated in developing a common competency profile and a pan-Canadian exam.
Recognizing that other provinces and territories in Canada are not regulated or are working to regulate this profession in their respective jurisdictions, CARB-TCMPA offers to share its expertise and invites legitimate organizations from other provinces and territories to join its ranks. We believe it is beneficial for all provinces and territories to work together and establish an essential common framework across the country to ensure the highest quality of care and development of the profession that meets the standards of public protection that all Canadians are entitled to expect.
CARB-TCMPA further encourage all organizations recognised by a provincial or territorial government as the body that represents all practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine and/or acupuncturists within their jurisdiction to apply for membership.
Current CARB-TCMPA members are:
- College of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners and Acupuncturists of British Columbia
- College and Association of Acupuncturists of Alberta
- College of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners and Acupuncturists of Ontario
- The Order of Acupuncturists of Quebec
- College of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners and Acupuncturists of Newfoundland & Labrador
